The original ‘beast from the east’, the Nissan Skyline GT-R is an icon for power, speed and advanced Japanese automotive technology. With straight-6 engines capable of being tuned to over 1000bhp, 4WD, intelligent torque-splitting differentials, rear-wheel steering and enough electronics to keep a space station going, the R-32, R-33 and most recent R-34 models are mechanical ‘tour de forces’ . If you thought only groundhugging 2-seater sportscars with names like Ferrari, Lamborghini or Porsche could be called 'supercars', think again!

Magnify Best Motoring International - Volume 8: Rx-8 Rotary Reborn (best Motoring International)
Best Motoring International - Volume 8: Rx-8 Rotary Reborn (best Motoring International)
Best Motoring International - Volume 8: Rx-8 Rotary Reborn (best Motoring International)
Best Motoring 8: RX-8 - Rotary Reborn finally gives the rotary fans a reason to buy DVDs again for the piston-less powerplant is back. In its latest DVD, Best Motoring International’s feature car is the new Mazda RX-8 with its 13B Renesis engine. Despite the title, Volume 8 has the most diverse supporting cast of any Best Motoring DVD, with emphasis on action over dialogue. But the star of the show is the Mazda RX-8. There is a brief history of the Mazda rotary engine and a technical run-down of the new rotary. Then we get to the good stuff. The RX-8 is put up against every conceivable competitor, based on any or all of the following criteria: price, performance and market segment. There are acceleration, slalom and high speed stability tests, a gymkhana, a skid pad test and then a six lap track battle at Tsukuba, Best Motoring’s regular test track. Through all these contests the RX-8 takes on the Nissan V35 Skyline Coupe, BMW 330i M Sports, S2000, 350Z, Integra Type R, Impreza WRX & MX-5. But of most interest to many will be the comparison between the RX-8 and the last-model RX-7. Another major feature of Best Motoring 8 is the Tuned Z Face off. The Best Motoring race drivers, Drift King Keiichi Tsuchiya and Manabu Orido put a series of modified Nissan 350Zs to the sword around Tsukuba. The workshops with the pride on the line are Kei Office, Auto Produce Boss, Mines and Esprit. There is also a sneak peak at the new Esprit tuned Z, punching out 490hp. After an evaluation (full racesuit-kitted Keiichi took the Kei Office Z for a spin, with bikini-clad co-host Aya Misaki in the passenger seat) the Mines, Boss & Esprit Zs lined up for a track battle, against a Yumekobo tuned Nissan S15 Silvia (200SX) and an Amuse tuned Honda S2000. The Touge Showdown is one of the most popular segments of the Best Motoring DVDs. This time it was a battle in the 280 category: over 2.0-litre engines, usually normally aspirated, maximum 280hp using street radials. The Honda EP3 Civic (tuned by Spoon), Honda Integra Type R (K-One), Honda Prelude (JUN ‘Super Lemon’) were the front wheel drive, or FF (Front engine, front drive) competitors, while a Toyota Altezza (G-Spice), and two Honda S2000s (MCR & Amuse) challenged for rear-driven (FR) honours. The winner was a big surprise, and another car was added to the AE86 in Best Motoring’s Touge Champions list. FEATURED CARS Mazda RX-8 Type S, Honda S2000, Nissan Skyline Coupe, Nissan 350Z Vers
