This box set features these 3 Classic War Flims from the Rank Classics Library: 49th Parallel (1941), The Battle of The River Plate (1956) & Above Us The Waves (1955). 49th Parallel A highly important and effective propaganda film, with outstanding performances from a high calibre cast and winner of an Oscar for Best Original Story. Michael Powell’s classic drama is set in the Second World War. A Nazi U-boat is sunk by the Canadian Air Force and all the crew are lost except six men who had been sent ashore before the attack. They stumble across an Eskimo village where Scott, Peter and his Eskimo servant, Martin live. Also present is a French trapper, Johnnie, who panics when held at gunpoint and is shot by one of the Nazis. After this the Allies send an S.O.S. plane, and it is the intention of the Nazis to hijack it and fly to neutral America. When the plane arrives, there is a scuffle but they manage to take off. Will they be caught before they kill again? Stars: Laurence Olivier as Johnnie, Anton Walbrook as Peter, Leslie Howard as Philip Scott Armstrong. The Battle Of The River Plate From the famous Powell and Pressburger team, this is a gripping drama set at sea. Ten days before the outbreak of World War II, a powerful German battleship sails around the South Atlantic destroying Allied merchant ships. Finally, the Allies learn of its location and a trap is set, pitching British intelligence against a powerful military opponent. Stars: John Gregson as Capt Bell, Peter Finch as Capt Langsdorff, Anthony Quayle as Cmdr Harwood. Above Us The Waves John Mills and Donald Sinden head a British cast in this World War II drama. The Battle of the Atlantic is raging and British ships are desperately needed. Most, however, are surrounding the deadly German battleship, Tirpitz. A plan is formulated to destroy it, but the only way is to use midget submarines. Will they succeed, and if so, at what cost? A gripping, action-packed battle from beginning to end. Stars: John Mills as Commander Fraser, Donald Sinden as Lt Tom Corbett, John Gregson as Lt Alec Duffy.
