An American In Paris / On The Town
AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (1951): 102 minutes An American G.I. lingers in Paris after the war to study painting and soon falls in love with Caron, an engaged mademoiselle, much to the chagrin of his romance-minded benefactress ON THE TOWN (1949): On the Town, New York, New York, it's a wonderful town especially when sailors Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin have a 24-hour shore leave to see the sights and when those sights include Ann Miller, Betty Garrett and Vera-Ellen. Co-Directed by Kelly and Stanley Donen, based on the Broadway hit and set to an Academy Award winning adaptation score, On the Town changed the landscape of movie musicals, opening filmmakers eyes to what could be done on location. And when brilliant location and studio production numbers are blended, it could be as here-ebullient, up-and-at-em perfection. The Bronx is up and the Batterys down, but no one can be down after going On the Town.

Magnify Billy Roses Jumbo
Billy Roses Jumbo
Billy Roses Jumbo
Jumbo is a mighty talented elephant. It’s also the ideal word to describe this big-time, big-top extravaganza bursting with laughter and love, song and dance, circus stunts and star power. Radiant Doris Day sings beloved Rodgers and Hart tunes and does her own horseback riding tricks in a razzle-dazzle musical based on Billy Rose’s stage spectacular and featuring circus sequences directed by Busby Berkeley. The story revolves around a circus owner (Jimmy Durante, star of the 1935 Broadway original) with only two real attractions: his daughter (Day) and popular pachyderm Jumbo. Three-ring pandemonium breaks out when a handsome rival (Stephen Boyd) infiltrates the circus, and father, daughter and Dad’s wisecracking fiancée (Martha Raye) are suddenly at risk of losing the greatest show on earth!

Look on a map and you won't find it. Look in your heart and there it will be. Enchantment is a place - and a movie - called Brigadoon when Gene Kelly stars in and choreographs a lyrical film adaptation of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's 1947 Broadway hit. Vincente Minnelli directs this ethereal tale of vacationing New Yorkers (Kelly and Van Johnson) who discover a Scottish village that comes to life once every 100 years for one day only. There, Kelly and a town lass (Cyd Charisse) share the love of a lifetime - a romance seemingly allotted just 24 hours. But fear not, there's magic and timeless songs hereabouts: Almost like Being in Love, The Heather on the Hill and more!

BRIGADOON (1954): 108 minutes Look on a map and you won't find it. Look in your heart and there it will be. Enchantment is a place - and a movie - called Brigadoon when Gene Kelly stars in and choreographs a lyrical film adaptation of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's 1947 Broadway hit. But fear not, there's magic and timeless songs hereabouts: Almost like Being in Love, The Heather on the Hill and more! TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME (1949): 93 minutes Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly play ball in a big way as 1900s vaudevillians who spend the winter flinging the onstage blarney and the summer flinging the ol' horsehide for base-ball's world champs, the Wolves. Sinatra is second sacker Dennis Ryan and Kelly is short-stop Eddie O'Brien in this Busby Berkeley-directed romp that combines baseball with that other all-American pastime: romance. Esther Williams plays the new team owner and Betty Garret is a Baseball Annie with eyes for blue-eyed Ryan. Kelly and Stanley Donen's deft musical stagings ranged from a soft-shoe duet charmer to an exciting "barrel roll" Kelly solo. Their work persuaded producer Arthur Freed to green-light their direction of the same year's On the Town.

By The Light Of The Silvery Moon
The stars come out when the night shimmers like this! Young lovers Doris Day and Gordon MacRae return in a moonlit sequel to On Moonlight Bay. Rosemary DeCamp, Mary Wickes and Billy Gray rejoin them in this remembrance of World War I-era Americana. There’s a new array of nine nostalgic standards – and a new emphasis on production numbers. Doris and Gordon spin through the Winfield kitchen to Ain’t We Got Fun, Doris crows King Chanticleer at a stage pageant and the whole town heads to Miller’s Pond and laces up the ice skates for the title-tune finale. Like its predecessor, this draws from Booth Tarkington’s Penrod stories for its portraits of heartland mirth, values and “warm hearts, cold feet” romance. Ain’t we got fun? You bet we have!

Gigi
A home, a motorcar, servants, the latest fashions: the most eligible and most finicky bachelor (Louis Jourdan) in Paris offers them all to Gigi (Leslie Caron). But she, who's gone from girlish gawkishness to cultured glamour before our eyes, yearns for that wonderful something money can't buy. Producer Arthur Freed, director Vincente Minnelli and a cast rife with Gallic charm combine talents for this lavish winner of nine Academy Awards including Best Picture. Its Alan Jay Lerner/Frederick Loewe songs can sparkle like The Night They Invented Champagne or caress with title-tune tenderness. "I Remember It Well." man-about-town Maurice Chevalier sings to Hermione Gingold. Live love itself, Gigi is most memorable.

Great Ziegfeld
Flo Ziegfeld's midway attraction isn't drawing flies. "How's business, Ziggy?" a rival taunts. This winner of 3 Academy Awards including Best Picture provides the career-chronicling answer. Florenz Ziegfeld Jr.'s business was good (with Broadway's legendary Follies and more), bad (including times the showman could scarcely rub two nickels together) and rarely lacking optimistic excess. The Great Ziegfeld casts William Powell at the head of a lustrous cast including real-life Ziegfeldians and Hollywood favourites (particularly Best Actress Oscar winner Luise Rainer). Key creative personnel from Ziegfeld shows are on board. And musical numbers (like A Pretty Girl Is like a Melody, which earned Seymour Felix the Best Dance Direction Oscar) meld Ziegfeld lavishness with cinematic pizzazz. Great? You Bet!

High Society / Anchors Aweigh
HIGH SOCIETY (1956): 108 minutes This witty, musical version of The Philadelphia Story stars Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and the jazz master himself, Louis Armstrong, playing the hottest trumpet in the land. ANCHORS AWEIGH (1945): 138 minutes Given free rein in choreographing Anchors Aweigh, Gene Kelly was eager to do the unexpected. But what? "How about doing a dance with a cartoon?" collaborator and friend Stanley Donen asked. How about it indeed. Kelly's live-action fancy footwork with animated Jerry (of Tom and Jerry) remains a milestone of movie fantasy. Frank Sinatra and Kathryn Grayson also headline this wartime tale of two sailors on leave in Hollywood. Sinatra's I Fall in Love Too Easily, the exuberant Kelly/Sinatra We Hate to Leave and other highlights helped Anchors Aweigh weigh in with an Academy Award for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture, plus four more Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Actor (Kelly).
